Ten Tips for Choosing Your Outfits for Your Senior Pictures

Choosing Your Outfits for Your Senior Pictures

Choosing the right variety of outfits for your Portland senior pictures can make a big difference in how you feel and look in your pictures. Here are ten tips to help you select the perfect clothing for your Portland senior photo session.

TIP: Here in Portland and surrounding areas, most of our schools have yearbook deadlines for senior pictures in October or November. This means the summer before your senior year is the time to schedule your senior portrait session.

1. Reflect Your Personality

Your senior pictures should reflect who you are. Choose outfits that showcase your personal style. Whether you prefer casual, boho, preppy, or edgy looks, make sure your clothing feels true to you. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident during your session, which will shine through in your photos.

2. Consider the Location

Think about where your photos will be taken. If you’re having an outdoor shoot in a park or a garden, light, airy colors and natural fabrics might work best. For an urban setting, you might opt for something a bit more polished or trendy. Matching your outfit to the environment can help create a cohesive and visually appealing look. When I start a senior portrait session, I always review all of your outfits and plan each for the different locations I know we will be photographing at. That way each outfit compliments the locations and feels cohesive. Want more tips from this Portland senior pictures photographer about choosing your outfits? 3. Choose Timeless Pieces

While trendy pieces can be fun, they can also date your photos quickly. Opt for classic, timeless clothing that will still look good years from now. Simple, well-fitting pieces in solid colors or subtle patterns often work best. Avoid logos and overly busy prints that can distract from your face.

4. Layering is Key

Layering can add depth and interest to your outfit. Consider adding a jacket, cardigan, or scarf to your look. This not only adds texture but also gives you the option to change up your outfit slightly without a complete wardrobe change. It can help you achieve a variety of looks with minimal effort. This is one of my favorite ways to easily switch up an outfit in two seconds. We can get so many more varied images easily just by swapping out a jacket, sweater or scarf!

5. Think About Color Coordination

Consider the colors that look best on you and coordinate your outfits accordingly. Neutrals and earth tones are always a safe bet, but don’t be afraid to incorporate some of your favorite colors. Just make sure they complement your skin tone and hair color. And choose a variety of colors so all your outfits don’t feel similar in the final images.

6. Select Variety

I always suggest at least three different outfits or looks for your session. Selecting at least one casual outfit and another dressier, or with a different vibe is ideal.  Solids or understated patterns work best for clothing – stay away from big bold patterns or prints.  Choose a variety of colors as well. If all your selections are in the same color family your final images will feel less varied. Feel free to bring a bit more clothing for options if you are unsure. It’s easy to have a few extra items in your car and we can decide together what will work best for the locations.

7. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories can add a personal touch to your outfit, but keep them simple and minimal. A statement necklace, a watch, or a hat can be great additions, but avoid anything that could be too distracting. Remember, the focus should be on you, not your accessories.

8. Plan Ahead

Lay out your outfits ahead of time and try them on to ensure they fit well and look good together. Take some test photos to see how the colors and styles work on camera. This can help you make any necessary adjustments before the day of your shoot. Also make sure your clothes are wrinkle free (especially if they are new and have those new shirt fold lines). Hang them on hangers and transport them in your car carefully to keep them free of wrinkles.

9. Don’t Forget About Shoes

Your shoes might show in some of your photos, so don’t neglect them. Choose shoes that are clean, in good condition, and match your outfit. Make sure they are comfortable enough to walk around in for an extended period or bring a comfortable slip-on pair for the walking in between locations.

10. Be Yourself

Most importantly, be yourself. Your Portland senior pictures should capture your essence and individuality. Wear something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself and have fun with it. Your confidence and personality will be the most memorable aspects of your photos.

Choosing your clothing for high school senior pictures doesn’t have to be stressful. By reflecting your personality, considering the location, and prioritizing comfort and timelessness, you can create a look that you’ll love for years to come. Plan ahead, keep accessories minimal, and most importantly, be yourself. Your senior pictures are a celebration of you, so let your true self shine through.
